This spring session, students in Graphic Design 2 were prompted to reflect upon the social “labels” they’ve encountered in their lives thus far, whether those were stereotypes placed on them, or identities that they’ve assigned themselves. Led by teaching artist Mindy Lee, students were guided through a complete design process, conceiving their own new label and brand.
“There are LABELS that others have given us and LABELS we have given ourselves to uniquely describe who we are.
Some LABELS have stuck with us. Some have hurt us and some have empowered us. There are LABELS created to harm and oppress and there are LABELS created to bring people together.
And then there are..
LABELS that need to be RELABELED and RECLAIMED to REVIVE those who have been misrepresented. “
Students researched their ideas, brainstormed, designed their own logo and signature, created a piece of apparel or product for their new brand, and then created an editorial spread and photo shoot to include in the class’ digital look book.
“By learning to build their own brands, students learn different ways they can visually package their ideas and identities in a way that can serve and delight others,” says Mindy Lee. “They also learn that building a brand requires extensive research into who they are, what they want to convey, and who they want to convey it to.”
We are so proud to share with you the completed project. By going through the process of developing their own labels, students creatively explored matters of identity, culture, self-respect, individuality and much more. Please take a moment to view these newly created brands here.
